My path to becoming a safe skipper: A report from my sailing training

As a sailor, I not only want to enjoy the freedom on the water, but also sail safely and responsibly. To achieve this goal, I have participated in various seminars over the past few months that have opened up new perspectives and significantly expanded my knowledge.

Electronic navigation – more than just a plotter

The electronic navigation seminar showed me that a modern plotter is much more than just a chart plotter. I learned how to link different data sources to plan precise routes and identify potential hazards early on. I was particularly impressed by the ability to display weather data directly on the plotter, allowing me to optimally adapt my trips to the weather conditions.

The yacht’s electrics – finally understood

As someone who enjoys getting things done, the yacht electrical seminar was truly enriching. I finally understood how the various components of the onboard electrical system interact and what the potential sources of error are. The practical exercises with the multimeter helped me build my confidence in handling electrical systems. I am now able to perform minor repairs myself, saving myself considerable shipyard costs.

Preparing for the big journey – ocean crossing

Even though I'm not currently planning an ocean crossing, this seminar was a great inspiration. The comprehensive information on route planning, weather forecasts, and onboard management showed me how much preparation goes into such a journey. I learned what equipment is essential and how to mentally prepare for such a challenge.

The engine – the heart of every yacht

As a sailor, I'm naturally interested in my engine. The seminar on boat engines helped me better understand my drive system and identify potential problems early on. I will consistently implement the maintenance and care tips in the future to extend the lifespan of my engine.

Weather forecast – the basis for safe trips

The weather plays a crucial role in sailing. In this seminar, I learned how to effectively use various weather apps to plan my trips safely. I found the explanations of the different weather models and the tips for interpreting weather maps particularly helpful.

Search and rescue – prepared for all eventualities

No one wants to imagine being in an emergency situation. Nevertheless, it's important to be prepared. In this seminar, I learned how to act correctly in an emergency and how to call for help. The practical exercises on people overboard and using the radio gave me a lot of confidence.

Conclusion: An investment in your own safety

Attending these seminars was one of the best decisions I could have made as a sailor. I now feel more confident, more competent, and enjoy sailing much more. The knowledge I gained allows me to plan my trips better and minimize potential risks.

I highly recommend every sailor to continue their education regularly. There are so many interesting topics to explore. Invest in your safety and your sailing pleasure!
