America's Cup yacht in San Francisco
I was able to experience a great event on September 16 , 2022 in the USA. At the helm of the USA 76, we headed across San Francisco Bay and out into the Pacific. Passing Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge with such a racing boat was truly an experience.
The USA 76 is an international America's Cup class racing yacht used by the ORACLE Racing Team in its preparations for the 2003 America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand. ORACLE made it to the final of the Louis Vuitton Challenger Series where it faced the impressive Alinghi team from Switzerland. Alinghi eventually won the Cup after an impressive performance.
In September 2003, ORACLE arranged a "rematch" against Alinghi in San Francisco . It was an opportunity to showcase America's Cup sailing on the bay and to give the Golden Gate Yacht Club representatives a chance to regain their pride after their defeat in Auckland. Once again, the competition was fierce, especially in the windy climes off San Francisco. ORACLE and USA 76, which had a little more time to prepare and with local honors at stake, won both competitions. USA 76 is now berthed at PIER 39 and has been on charter since June 2011.
Today the yacht can be booked for events: https://www.acsailingsf.com/san-francisco-sailing
